Background
Funded largely through philanthropic donations—including a $75 million gift from businessman Ronald O. Perelman, after whom the center is named—the project was finally set in motion in the late 2010s.
Designed by REX, the architecture firm led by Joshua Ramus
Translucent Marble Façade:
The building is wrapped in thin marble panels laminated between glass, allowing the exterior to glow with warm, diffused light in the evening. The effect creates a striking presence, balancing solidity with transparency.Flexible Performance Spaces:
The center features three reconfigurable theaters that can be combined or rearranged to accommodate a variety of performances, from theater and dance to concerts and multimedia experiences. This flexibility allows for 62 different stage and seating configurations.Integration with the World Trade Center Site:
The building sits on the former site of the original 2 World Trade Center, directly adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial. It was designed to be welcoming and accessible, offering a cultural space that fosters resilience, creativity, and remembrance.
