Background

  • The structure was conceived as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards Public Plaza, aiming to create a new interactive and engaging public space.

  • Envisioned as a vertical climbing experience, providing visitors with unique perspectives of the surrounding cityscape. The design encourages visitors to explore different vantage points and experience the space from various angles.

  • Inspired by ancient stepwells in India, the design consists of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, 80 landings, and 2,500 individual steps, creating a honeycomb-like structure that rises 150 feet (46 meters) high.

  • The geometric form is made of bronze-colored steel and concrete, with its reflective surfaces enhancing its dynamic interaction with light and the surrounding environment.

  • Built in Monfalcone, Italy, the modular pieces were shipped to New York for final assembly.

  • The cost of the project was estimated at $200 million

  • Its presence contributes to the ongoing conversation about the role of public art and architecture in large-scale urban developments.
