Background
The structure was conceived as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards Public Plaza, aiming to create a new interactive and engaging public space.
Envisioned as a vertical climbing experience, providing visitors with unique perspectives of the surrounding cityscape. The design encourages visitors to explore different vantage points and experience the space from various angles.
Inspired by ancient stepwells in India, the design consists of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, 80 landings, and 2,500 individual steps, creating a honeycomb-like structure that rises 150 feet (46 meters) high.
The geometric form is made of bronze-colored steel and concrete, with its reflective surfaces enhancing its dynamic interaction with light and the surrounding environment.
Built in Monfalcone, Italy, the modular pieces were shipped to New York for final assembly.
The cost of the project was estimated at $200 million
Its presence contributes to the ongoing conversation about the role of public art and architecture in large-scale urban developments.
